Why crocodiles?

Before Belgian Crocs, there was just a crocodile

I painted How Crocodiles Read simply because I liked the idea of a crocodile quietly reading under a lamp. There was no plan for a character, a collection or a whole crocodile universe.

People just seemed to like him.

So he stayed.

Then Belgium happened

What to wear in Belgium.

One September, I came back to Belgium after spending the summer with my family in Italy.

Within days, Belgian weather did what Belgian weather does best: coat in the morning, umbrella before lunch, sunglasses in the afternoon sometimes all in the same day.

I started wondering how that original crocodile would dress for it.

That is how What to wear in Belgium (a typical day) was born.

It went on to become one of my most loved artworks and the beginning of Belgian Crocs.

And he kept coming back

At some point, the crocodile needed a name.

Somewhere along the way, we started calling him Robert.

To me, he had always been the same crocodile - just dressed for whatever Belgium threw at him next.

Soon Robert was dealing with rain, waffles, frites, beer and those rare Belgian moments when the sun actually comes out.

Sometimes his family shows up too.

The one carrying all the frites? Apparently his uncle.

The waffle umbrella? His brother.

Don't ask me. Apparently they have their own family logic.

From watercolor to everyday life

Robert escaped the paper.

What started as watercolor eventually found its way onto little things you can carry around - stickers, keychains, totes and a few other Belgian experiments.
